One of the things I want to do when I grow up is to be a lot like this man, Hugh Freeze, Head Coach of the Ole Miss Rebels football team.

It isn’t just because I’m an Ole Miss fan, this man talks the talk, and much more importantly, walks the walk. Plus, I totally get his God moments. I have had more than my share. I wasn’t there, and the article doesn’t say it but, I am willing to bet the Coach Freeze laughed when he read that Scripture that sealed the deal for him to take the Ole Miss job. I know that Sally and I laughed a lot when we decided to move to Virginia back in the Fall of 2001. There were a lot of those Providential moments for us. We sat under many sermons that preached getting out of your comfort zone, heeding the call of God, going to a far country, when one door closes another one opens. That’s the God moment. Not “what if God was one of us, just a slob like one of us, just a stranger on the bus…” or “I found God, on the corner of 1st and Amistad, smoking His last cigarette…”

Coach Freeze has a strong desire to live out his faith right out in the open. He isn’t in your face, hammering you over the head with a Bible, screaming “Turn or Burn!” He is just going about his day, in a job that he loves and reflecting the love of Christ out to his players and hoping that some of that loves sticks to them and shines on those they come in contact with.

I wish the light of Christ would shine in me like that.
